This page captures the various observations on the weather that has been scattered around these pages. I apologise about the lack of detail − this isn't a weather station after all.
In January 2010 we started to record temperatures (max & min), precipitation, cloud and wind each day.
In December 2008 we started to record data for each month, adding maximum and minimum temperatures for all months.
Prior to this date only the Winter month's minima were recorded. However, any that were recorded are captured on this page.
Any gaps are marked as "n/a".

+1°C | +16°C |
February:
It was drier this month, with rain on only 10 days, some improvements I suppose. The grass dried out enough to give it a 1st cut, but the soil was still to wet to walk on, so still no digging, or planting. No snow. The sun came out on about half the days − another improvement. Also, the cloud was more broken. Not cold, but we had a few dry wintry days where the temperature was lower, but felt less cold than the diabolical dampness, but only a couple of frosts. The temperature ranges: night minima −1 to +9°C, and daytime maxima from +6 to +12°C. The winds were dramatic, with all sorts of strength from all directions. We felt the power of storm Imogen, bringing down one of next door's trees. The temperature ranges: night minima −4 to +11°C, and daytime maxima from +4 to +14°C. The winds were generally in the westerly quarter, but nothing too strong. |
−4°C | +14°C |

December:
The month can best be described as Wet, making it impossible to work in the garden. No snow or hale. Summer came with a vengeance, and the garden became very dry and arid − many hours of watering were needed, better than working in the heat. A very dry month, with the only decent rain delivered in a couple of spectacular thunderstorms. Apart from a few days at each end of the month, we had wall-wall sunshine. The daytime temperatures were hot, several too hot to do anything strenuous. The night temperatures were also warn, with a few too hot for sleep. Temperature ranges: night minima from +11 to +16°C, and daytime maxima from +17 to +30°C. Winds were light or even slight, so the direction was largely irrelevant. |

March:
Shouldn't have done any pruning last month − it was the coldest March I can remember, and a lot of the newly pruned shoots died back, as did many other plants putting out new growth. Vary little rain, and several snow flurries (nothing settled though), half the days were completely dry. Cloud on most days, but we had some clear days. A couple of misty mornings. An extremely cold month − with frost on 14 nights, very cold for March in this part of the world. Temperature ranges: night minima from −3 to +7°C, and daytime maxima from +1 to +13°C. The wind was stuck in the N − E quarter all month. Several days being bitter. |

No extremes of temperature − with frost on 10 nights, which thawed during daylight hours. Temperature ranges: night minima from −2 to +7°C, and daytime maxima from +2 to +11°C. Two days of gales at the start of the month, and generally fairly light for the rest - significant wind-chill during the cold periods. |

January:
The late flowering gave up when the snow arrived, but snowdrops are coming out. Too wet underfoot to do anything in the garden. There was less rain this month, with a healthy dollop of snow, enough to prevent our reaching the town for 1 day. About half the days were completely dry, and no really heavy rain all month. December:
Just one Salvia (S. involucrata) remained in flower. This was a mixed month, with about half the days dry, but when it did rain it was very heavy. The temperatures were also very variable, with three very cold days / nights and the rest being mild. Temperature ranges: night minima from −4 to +8°C, and daytime maxima from 0 to +11°C. The winds were very variable as well. |
−4°C | +11°C |
November:
A few Salvias and Roses continued to flower. The dampness continued, again with about half the days without rain, and the others damp or showery − I suppose that is an improvement. Cloud was the outstanding feature of the sky, and very few breaks. Sun all day on 3 days but hardly any fog. The temperatures were warm for the time of year with only one freezing night, right at the end of the month. Temperature ranges: night minima from −1 to +9°C, and daytime maxima from +4 to +13°C. The winds were variable in both strength and direction. |
−1°C | +13°C |

September:
The late flowering continued, Dregea, Roses, Salvias and Fuchsias all continued to flower. It was a lot less wet − half the days were without rain, and only 1 day was wet all day. It was less cloudy, but not many sunny days − we saw the sun on about 12 days. The temperatures perked up a bit this month, but no Indian Summer. The wetness continued this month, but there was some improvement, and several plants that normally flower in June only came out this month. There were 12 days without rain, and the rain was normally in the form of showers. It was a cloudy month, with only 4 days of uninterrupted sun. The temperatures continued below average, only exceeding +20°C on 10 days, and only managing +25°C on one day. +9°C | +26°C |
June:
This June has been confirmed as the wettest on record, and the plants reflected this. There were 10 days without rain, and 12 days that were wet all day − in June?! It was a very dark and cloudy month, with only two days of uninterrupted sun. The sun appeared on only only 10 days. The temperatures reflected the miserable weather, we normally expect more than +25°C at least once during the month. Temperature ranges: night minima from +7 to +15°C, and daytime maxima from +12 to +22°C. The winds were variable in direction, with 2 days of gales − most unusual. |
+7°C | +22°C |
May:
The first half had a lot of intermittent, fairly light rain, and the 2nd half was dry, causing new plantings quite a lot of stress. There was a lot of cloudy days with the sun only breaking through during the second half. It started off fairly cold, but as the month progressed it became very warm. Temperature ranges: night minima from +4 to +16°C, and daytime maxima from +10 to +25°C. The winds were light swinging from East to West. |
+4°C | +25°C |
April:

We were away in the SE of the country for the 1st half of the month, where the weather was mainly dry with a lot of sun but a bitter north wind. Here, we are told, it was very overcast with a lot of sea-mist cum fog. The 2nd half of the month it was virtually dry, with only a couple of light showers. There was a lot of clear skies giving bright sunny days and clear cold nights. The last 10 days of the month got very warm, with clear skies resulting in cold nights, but no frost − another false Spring, because they returned to normal on the 31st. Temperature ranges: night minima from +2 to +7°C, and daytime maxima from +10 to +22°C. The winds were gentle, mainly from the E to SE quarter. |
+2°C | +22°C |
February:
Virtually dry all month, with no significant deposits. There were light showers on 3 days, with one smattering of light snow − nothing settled. It was cloudy throughout the month, with only 6 clear sunny days, is seemed very dark, but then it is February. The 1st half of the month was cold, this was our Winter, and did a lot of damage, killing off our Echium pininana which had grown about 1.5m in one season, from self-sown seeds from our last flowering − about 4 years ago. We had potted up several, but only one survived, in the greenhouse. It warmed up during the second half of the month with several usable gardening days. Temperature ranges: night minima from −6 to +7°C, and daytime maxima from 0 to +16°C. The winds were very light throughout the month. |
−6°C | +16°C |

April: The only rain was on 3 days, and that barely wetted the ground − 2 water butts have already been emptied. The ground was so dry we put off planting out so watering was contained to a small area. The sun showed its face on virtually every day, and there was no cloud on 13 days. There was no frost all month. Temperature ranges: night minima from +4 to +12°C, and daytime maxima from +12 to +26°C. The winds were unexceptional, but the winds towards the end of the month made the ground even drier. |

2010 | ||
December: The snow that fell last month did not thaw until the 5th. It stayed dry until the 17th when another 80mm fell over a 2 day period. This did not thaw until the 28th, so we had a white Christmas. No more snow, only a couple of days of fog and mizzle. The temperatures were very cold throughout the month − reportedly the coldest December ever. It was a dark month, with the sun only showing itself on about 8 days. The winds were only occasionally very strong, but mainly had a northern feel making it feel even more chilly. |
−7°C | +9°C |
November: Generally dry and very mild with S −> SW winds for the first week. The second week became cooler, with near average temperature. The Wind changed to the NW, it remained mainly dry. The second half of the month saw it getting chilly then cold, with 50mm of snow on the 26th (North and East of the country came to a grinding halt). For the rest of the month it was dry, but the deep chill remained with a biting N −> NE Wind. |
−5°C | +16°C |
October: Rain fell intermittently for the first week. Then dry for the vast majority of the rest of the month − just a couple of days / nights when some fell. The sun showed its face on 13 days, mainly during the dry spell (no surprise there). The daytime temperatures were in double figures throughout the month. The night temperatures varied from 0°C (on the 25th) to +15°C (on the 9th). Wind was variable but nothing too dramatic. |
0°C | +20°C |
September: The month started bright and fairly warm. Some rain fell on the 1st, and a few spits and spots between the 7th and 13th, the drought continued throughout the month. All water-butts were empty by the 20th, and the garden needed watering (and not just the pots). The daytime temperature was above 20°C for all but 5 days. | +5°C | +23°C |
August: The first half of the month was generally dry with a lot of cloud. From the 14th we had some rain every day until the 27th. It was bright and sunny for the remainder of the month. | +9°C | +24°C |
July: Rain was promised for the 1st, but it arrived 12 hours late! As we opened the garden that day we were very grateful. Thereafter, we had rain every 4 or 5 days, slowing down the Undergardener's least favourite job − cutting the hedges. However, it was very hot and humid when the sun shone. | +12°C | +29°C |
June: Some rain fell on the 1st, and a few spits and spots between the 7th and 13th, the drought continued throughout the month. All water-butts were empty by the 20th, and the garden needed watering (and not just the pots). The daytime temperature was above 20°C for all but 5 days. | +7°C | +27°C |
May: The only rain was a bit of light drizzle on the 16th. The wind remained a cold North=Easterly. There were no overnight frosts, but the wind-chill made it feel sub-zero. After the 16th the days began to feel warm, coinciding with the little bit of rain that did fall. Plants that had survived the winter's cold began to die back, as if the warm sun forced them to draw up water which enabled the cold wind to burn the new green growth. |
+3°C | +27°C |
April: The cold dry weather continued, with the wind still in the North-East. The temperature range between day and night was often more than 12°C, reflecting the low humidity. | 0°C | +24°C |
March: Another cold dry month − it rained on only 7 days of the month, and that was from the 18th, by when the temperature managed to creep into double figures; and there were no more overnight frosts. The wind was from the North-east throughout the month. | −6°C | +13°C |
February: A dry Month with 13 over-night frosts, and a cold north-easterly wind throughout the month. There was no sign of warming as the month progressed. | −3°C | +11°C |
January: 1st Overnight frost, max daytime temp +1°C. The Dregea and Iochroma still have not lost all their leaves − so clearing up is not yet finished. 5th Snow flurries all day. 6th Woke up to 7.5cm snow, below freezing all day. 7th Very cold night (−7°C), all of yesterday's packed down snow turned into skating rink. 8th Another min temperature (−8°C). Daytime temperature rose to +1°C. The overnight frosts continued, with daytime maxima of +1°C until: 13th when another 5.0cm snow appeared in the morning. The daytime maximum rose to about 2°C, and the snow turned to mush by the following day. 14th Overnight minimum a mild −1°C, felt almost mild, the thaw continued. 15th The thaw accelerated leaving a sludge of leaves that had fallen as a result of the snow, so couldn't be cleared up. The second half of the month was more normal − with 4 night-time frosts (−4°C on 27th and 31st); the days varied between +2 and +10 °C. Very little rain - only 1 day. | −8°C | +10°C |
2009 | ||
December: 1st The first frost −2°C. 10th − 1st dry day since the 2nd, start of a colder drier period. 11th − fog all day max temp +2°C. 17th − had been cold every day - max +3°C, but had a very hard frost last night −5°C. 19th - the days have continued cold, yesterday it rained all day - it froze overnight - lethal. 21st - Rain forecast - it turned into snow, freezing overnight turned the roads into a skating rink. 23rd - travelled to London for Xmas - went through rain, sleet and fog - not fun, about 4 ° warmer there. 28th - at last all the Acer leaves have fallen, and all cleared up - temp max 3°C. Overnight frosts continued to end of month. | −5°C | +11°C |
November: Mild, rain and wind, a lot of all these. It continued until the 25th then it got Chilly, very rainy and very windy. By the end of the month, the big Acer palmatum and many other plants still had half their leaves, and the ground was so sodden it was nigh on impossible to clear up those leaves that had fallen. | +3°C | +15°C |
October: The drought finally finished on the 6th, but until then there were some very cold nights, but no frost was seen at Clevedon. The rest of the month was very mild, with occasional rain, and no frost. The garden was prepared for winter, but nothing has yet been put under cover. | +4°C | +17°C |
September: The weather dried up after a wet start. This was caused by a high pressure system the gave us cold NE winds, and a lot of cloud. However, when the sun did appear it was very warm. There was no further rain until the end of the month, the garden needed lots of manual watering, and half the butts dried up. | +7°C | +24°C |
August: This started unsettled. There were a couple of good weeks, enabling the Undergardener to cut the hedges. The month finished cold, windy and wettish. | +8°C | +24°C |
July: Unsettled, in short. Almost one wet day, and one dry day throughout the month. Our first opening (16th) rain absolutely chucked down − we got soaked. The second (23rd) and the third (30th) opening was dry and sunny. | +8°C | +24°C |
June: This month we had Summer − it was even warm. In fact too warm to do too much in the sun. | +5°C | +28°C |
May: The large variation in day − night temperature continued, but it remained dry. Became very cautious about planting out the tender plants. | +2°C | +25°C |
April: The cold dry weather continued for the 1st week. Then the days started to warm up but the nights remained cold. | +1°C | +23°C |
March: The first half has been windy and damp; temperatures have not been cold, but the wind has made it feel very chilly. The second half was very dry with some northerly winds damaging the new growth. | 0°C | +15°C |
February: Snow came with a vengeance on the 3rd, with a second dose on the 5th, and no let-up in overnight frost. The snow cleared away by 11th, and it warmed up enough for us to start the winter pruning. By 16th: Apples, Acer and Raspberries done − well done. The Headgardener started to clear out the mess of killed succulents left behind in the Greenhouse bed. | −4°C | +9°C |
January: started as last December had left off, but even colder. The Maximum temperature was +2°C until the 10th. Also, We have had frost every night since the 28th December last. | −7°C | +5°C |
2008 | ||
December: The start was the coldest early December for 30 years. It didn't even warm up for Christmas. | −3°C | +5°C |
